Montebello castle is situated in the inland of Rimini. It is mainly famous for the mysterious tale of Azzurrina, a child who vanished in one of the corridors of the fortress in the second half of the 14th century. The story goes that one day the girl was playing in the fortress with a ball made of cloths, under the protective supervision of two soldiers. The ball rolled down the staircase leading to the ice-house (a kind of cellar). Knowing that there was only one entrance to that room, the soldiers were not worried when they saw Azzurrina running after her ball. All they could hear was her last shout…then nothing: neither Azzurrina nor the ball could be found after that, even after the whole castle and the surrounding village had been combed.
In the ancient, medieval village of Poggio Berni, you will be impressed by the stately Palazzo Marcosanti, standing imposing as the only building on the hill. Quite close to Poggio Berni, the charming village of Verucchio well deserves a stop. It is a place suspended between history and legend, the birthplace of the Malatesta family and this, according to the tale, was also the set for the tragic love of Dante’s Paolo and Francesca.
This enchanting village stands imposing and austere on the spur of a rock overhanging the valley.
It is an historical village, where pages of history have been written on the cobbles of the church and the fortress.
